History of the Department of Construction Management as an Academic Discipline

Construction Management, otherwise known as Construction Project Management, is the field pertaining to the coordination, planning and control over a certain project. The main aim here is to teach students on how to meet the specifications of clients at a given period of time. The course was divided by the Construction Management Association of America (or CMAA) into seven categories namely: (1) Time Management; (2) Project Management Planning; (3) Quality Management; (4) Cost Management; (5) Safety Administration; (6) Contract Management and (7) CM Professional Practice.

The History of Construction Management as a Profession

Construction Management's history can be dated back to as early as 1869 to 1883 when the Brooklyn Bridge was constructed. From here, many other things took place which inspired universities to include the said subject within their respective curriculum. Standards set within the profession became more elaborate after project and construction managers recognized how the construction management method helped deliver high quality results as demanded by clients. In the early part of the 1980's, universities together with their research teams started to conceptualize their corresponding Construction Management Programs.

Construction Management History in Boise State University

The University started a program in Construction Management in 1976. This was after the Associated General Contractors or ACG of America (specifically its Idaho Branch) approached the university to offer such a program within Boise. The ACG provided funds to push through with the program. In 1977, the State Board of Education developed and at the same time approved Boise's curriculum for Construction Management. But, the course was offered only after two years later to BSU students and was under the Physics Department. This was a department overseen by the College of Arts and Sciences.

It was in 1986 when a specific department for the program was created. This was then called as the Department of Construction Management and Pre-Engineering. This was still under the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1990, the department was finally transferred under the banner of the BSU's College of Technology. Seven years later, in 1997, the department became part of the College of Engineering.
