How Many Ink Cartridges Are Recycled? How Many Go To The Landfill?

Each and every year an estimated seven hundred million printer ink cartridges are used in the United States of America alone. Of these, only a very small amount of these printer ink cartridges are actually recycled. This is a major problem for the environment at large. In fact, printer ink that remains in these printer cartridges can leak from the retired printer ink cartridges and can pollute the environment. Additionally, the plastics which are used for the printer ink cartridges casing will take multiple generations to actually decompose. In addition to all of that, you have to also take into consideration that three quarts of oil are actually required to produce just one printer ink cartridge.

These are alarming statistics and numbers when you think about them. A single printer ink cartridge can have very detrimental effects on the environment. However, whose fault is this really? Until recent years there were not many options for individuals who desired to actually recycle their used printer ink cartridge. In fact, many recycling stations would charge consumers who wanted to recycle their used printer ink cartridges. This ultimately led to more and more people giving up on the recycling of ink cartridges all together and consequently, landfills once again began to fill up with these cartridges.

Another problem with recycling ink cartridges is even though you can now do this for free; there are very few recycling stations available for this purpose and consumers actually have to go out and search for these stations. In the end many consumers come to the conclusion that there is no local or close recycling center for printer ink cartridges in their area, so once again they give up and toss their used printer cartridges into the trash.

However, there are many people who have found unique and interesting things to do with their used printer ink cartridges and they have started to recycle them themselves. Additionally, many schools and churches have come to realize how many people desire to recycle their used printer ink cartridges so they have started to create exciting printer ink cartridge fundraisers wherein they receive money for every used printer ink cartridge that is dropped off at their location.

It has been estimated that only one out of every 500 printer ink cartridges in the United States is actually recycled! This is a very staggering number. It is even more staggering when you consider that a single printer ink cartridge can be recycled and used over and over again. In fact, according to recent statistics it is estimated that a single printer ink cartridge can be recycled up to five times! Yet, the majority of these printer cartridges are still tossed out with the trash.

Environmentalists are fuming over these numbers and are attempting to make bold moves at high government levels in order to create new laws which force the government to make the recycling of printer ink cartridges a top priority. However, the choice of whether or not to offer this type of recycling is currently up to the cities that offer recycling. They are not forced to recycle every type of product.

Still, with numbers like those presented above its hard to understand why there are not more strict laws in place in regards to the disposal of printer ink cartridges.
