How do Printer Manufacturers Calculate Expected Print Yield of Printer Cartridge?

Printer Manufacturers need to get a fair idea of the print yield of a printer cartridge. This helps them promote these cartridges better and also helps them configure various printer features around the printer yield.

STEP 1: The Use of Standard Test Document

The test documents must be of standard size and they must be printed with the default settings on the printer. This means that there is a consistency with respect to the settings. Usually a test document of letter size or A4 size is chosen for the purpose.

STEP 2: Tested Cartridges

There are a fixed number of printer cartridges that must be tested. Some manufacturers test 9 printer cartridges while others might test more or even a lesser amount. This makes sure that the estimates of the predicted yield are reliable. The statistical confidence level is usually pegged at around 95%.

STEP 3: The End-of-Life Criterion

The cartridge print yield is calculated using specific measurements that establish a decision factor which revolves around on the end-of-life of the cartridge. Herein, the manufacturer’s instructions are of paramount importance. These, in point of fact, are the recommendations for the use of the cartridge. This decides the print yield, as well.

Moreover, for the purpose of page yield, the printer ink cartridges are not just tested on a specific printers but different printers. This takes care of the printer variability factor. Though these steps remain common for most printer manufacturers, some intrinsic changes might be made to the process.
